Introduction of finger Nails

Nails are composed of a protein called; keratin. Skin & hair are also made out of keratin.

The nails grow form the 'nails matrix' . And the nail matrix is the 'moon' or lunula. Futher along the nail, the matrix ends, and here comes the 'nail bed'.

The nail plate will move distally entirely by growth pressure arising from the matrix. The nail bed epithelium plays a passive roll in this movement.

Nails grow about 0.1mm per day (1 cm every 100 days!) on an average with growth faster in the summer than in the winter, and fingernails grows faster than toenails! Fingernails require 4 to 6 months to re-grow completely. Toenails require 12 to 18 months.

Well, let's take a look now at the world's longest nails -
